Zanskar Valley is located on the eastern corner of Jammu and Kashmir and separates from Ladakh by the Zanskar mountain range which is a part of the Himalayas. This Valley attracts tourists for its wide views and sceneries, cave monasteries and especially for trekking. This Valley is one of the most visited valleys of Ladakh after the Suru Valley and it is situated at an elevation of 13,153 meters above sea level.

Pangong Tso Lake

The Pangong Tso lake situated near Leh Ladakh is 4350 meters above sea level. This famous Lake has been a part of Bollywood movies like 3 Idiots, Sanam Re, and many more. The alluring beauty and the crystal clear waters and gentle Hills of the Pangong Lake are an example of the beautiful landscape of this heaven. Though tourists need a special permit to visit this Lake because it falls on the Sino-Indian actual Line of Control.

Kargil

Kargil has become a tourist hotspot in recent years. This magnificent and beautiful Paradise lies near to the line of control. This place has the famous known Nun Kun peaks which makes this place perfect for skiing, mountaineering, and trekking, this place rests on the bank of River Suru which also gives tourist opportunities for river rafting. Kargil is also one of the largest producers of apricots in the country.

Khardung-La Pass

Khardung-La pass was built in 1973 and was opened to the public in 1988. This pass has been very important to India for ages because it is one of the gateways to reach supplies to the Siachen Glacier where the highest battlefield of the world is situated. This pass is also an entrance to the Shyok and the Nubra Valley. From the top of this pass, you can get a great view of the Karakoram range and the great Himalayas with snow-capped peaks.

Numbra Valley

Nubra Valley is one of the most aesthetic places in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir. This ancient place serves as the old Silk route and has beautiful monasteries. The region is currently under military supervision because this road leads to Siachen Glacier. You need to get an Inner Line Permit to visit Nubra Valley from Khardung La Pass. Here you can also find the two hump camel which is known as a Bactrian camel.

Magnetic Hill

The famous magnetic hill of Ladakh defies Gravity if you park your vehicle at the base of the hill your vehicle will start moving upwards on the mountain define gravity. River Sindhu flows on the eastern side of the hill which originates in Tibet. This place has been an interesting hotspot for tourists to visit Ladakh.

Spituk Gompa

The Spituk Gompa is a Buddhist monastery in Leh which gives an overwhelming view of the Indus valley. This monastery currently houses 100 monks and a joint statue of Kali. This Buddhist monastery was founded during the 11th century by Lha Lama.

Hemis National Park

The Hemis National Park is surrounded by the Indus and Zanskar rivers which makes the National Park a beautiful place to visit. This National Park in Ladakh is one of the well-known places for the snow leopard. This National Park is situated at an altitude of 6000 meters from sea level and it was established in 1981. Here you will able to see the famous snow leopards, Tibetan wolf, red fox, and other wildlife.

Shanti Stupa

The Shanti Stupa in Leh is one of the magnificent Tibetan structure that was built by the Japanese and the Buddhist together to celebrate the 2500 years of Buddhism and to spread peace. This dome-shaped structure stands at a height of 11841 feet above sea level and attracts many tourists throughout the year, this structure also faces towards the Le Royal Palace. This Stupa also has a big Buddha statue which was enshrined by Dalai Lama. The snow-covered mountain ranges give a stunning view of the stupa

Hemis Monastery

The Hemis Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Hemis, Ladakh which is 45 kilometers from Leh and was built by the Kadakhi king Sengge Namgyal. This spectacular monastery is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and at the base, River Indus is flowing with an immersive beautiful view. Every year this monastery get the attraction of tourist during June and July for the Hemis festival.

Royal Leh Palace

The royal Leh Palace which is one of the historical pieces of evidence in Leh was built by king Senge Namgyal India 17 century. The royal Leh Palace is also one of the tallest buildings in Leh which gives a panoramic view of the entire town of Leh along with the Stok Kangri and the Zanskar mountains. Though now this palace is under the ruins because of the Kashmiri invasion in the 19th century. This Royal building proves to be standing evidence for the Namgyal dynasty in Leh.

MoonLand

The MoonLand in Lamayuru which is situated near the Leh-Kargil Road has a spectacular landscape that attracts many tourists who visit Ladakh. It is said that if one visits this place on a full moon night then this place becomes to be an extraordinary paradise to the tourist so this is a must-visit on the list.

Tso Moriri Lake

The Tso Moriri lake is one of the less-visited lakes in the Changtang Wildlife Sanctuary. This lake is 28 kilometer in length from north to south and 100 feet deep. The crystal clear water of the lake symbolizes its twin Pangong Lake and the lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains which makes this place a complete paradise for the tourist. There are many faunae available like the Brahman duck, the brown-headed gull, and the Himalayan hares are found here. This lake is also one of the highest lakes in India.

Chadar Trek

The Chadar trek in Leh which is also known as the frozen river Trek is a very famous trek if you visit Ladakh. This 6 day Trek goes over the Zanskar river. This track occurs from January to late March depending on the weather. This trek is also very challenging to complete.

Alchi

Alchi is one of the villages in Ladakh which has the famous Alchi monastery. Alchi has many Buddhist temples and the oldest and famous is The Alchi monastery symbolizes the traditional Tibetan architecture. People who visit this monastery also do river rafting on the Zanskar river which flows beside the monastery.

Thiksey Gompa

The Thiksey Gompa is one of Ladakh’s biggest and most recognized monastery. This old Tibetan Buddhist temple attracts many tourists throughout the year for its beautiful structure and attractive picturesque view. The snow-capped mountains and the beautiful rays of the sun make this place one of the best monasteries in Ladakh.

Diskit Monastery

The Diskit Monastery is the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra valley and it belongs to the Tibetan Buddhist. This monastery was founded by Changzeb Tserab Zaongpo. This monastery is also accompanied by a school that is helped by NGO, this school also teaches students science in the English language. River Shyok also flows at the foothills of the monastery.

Stakna Monastery

The Stakna monastery is situated on the bank of river Indus. The hill on which this monastery was built resembles that of a tiger-nose from where this monastery gets its name. From the top of the monastery, you can get a beautiful panoramic view of the Hemis.

Phyang Gompa

The Phyang Monastery is situated on the phyang hill which is the home to over 100 Buddhist monks. This gompa who was once the center of Digung teachings. Now here festivals are celebrated like the Gangsngon Tsedup Festival. You must visit this festival.

Likir Monastery

The Likir Monastery is near the Saspol village which is on the banks of river Indus. This monastery beholds Buddha statue which is 75 feet tall and is made of gold. The original structure of the monastery was destroyed by fire in the 11th century and it was rebuilt in the 18 century.

Phugtal Monastery

The Phugtal Monastery is located in the South-Eastern part of the Zanskar region in Ladakh. This 2250 years old monastery was once the school of the Buddhist where teaching, learning, and enjoyment was the main purpose. From distance, this monastery looks like a honeycomb from where it gets its name. You have to take to reach this monastery.

We went on a tour with Mercury Tours during Durga Pujo this year (2023). We went on their Gram Banglar Durga Pujo and the Visarjan Cruise. We had a good time. Everything was well organised and the tour organisers were polite and professional. Except for the four of us, everyone else on the trip were locals/ Bengalis and we were the only ones from a different state and the only vegetarians on board. It was a bit of a challenge for us, but the tour operators did their best to make us as comfortable as possible. Also, the bus in which we travelled could have been more comfortable. It was old bus and in places the water bottle holder was broken or the AC vent was broken etc. This wasn't a major concern though and was manageable. It would have also been a little more convenient if the trip end were mentioned in the itinerary, especially for the Gram pujo. As tourists, we had no idea of the distances and the traffic in Kolkata during Durga Pujo. So we were under the assumption that the trip would be over by 5:30 - 6:00pm. But by the time we reached our hotel, it was past 10:30. An idea would have been helpful. Everything else was well organised and I enjoyed myself very much. Thank you for the memorable experience 🙏
