Enjoy the sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya – The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed to be one of the coolest places in the Island, but it is really just like an English spring day, although the temperature does drop at night. All around Nuwara Eliya you will see evidence of the British influence, houses like country cottages or Queen Ann style mansions. Seasons may be absent elsewhere in Sri Lanka, but here you can read them by the flowers, which bloom in the spring (march to May) and the fall (August and September). These are the “seasons†when low-country folk flock to Nuwara Eliya to escape the sea level heat and humidity. On completion visit the Hakgala gardens: The Hakgala Botanical Garden was one of the pleasure gardens of King Ravana of the well-known epic Ramayanaya. Now there is a Temple erected for Lord Rama, Sitadevi, Luxshmana and Hanuman by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that foot prints akin to Lord Hamunams are found by this river -some small and some large. Divurumpola Temple: This is the place where Seetha Devi underwent “Agni Pariksha” (test). It is a popular place of worship among locals in this area. Divurumpola means place of oath in Sinhala. The legal system permits and accepts the swearing done at this temple while settling disputes between parties. Visit Ella: Visit Rawana waterfall in Ella. Ravana Waterfall: It is said that Ravana had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. Legend has it that when he came to this place he felt bramhaasthi dosham was not following him and he stopped the vimana and asked God Shiva for remedy. Lord Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised him to install four lingams there and pray to get rid of the dosham. Katharagama: This is the temple of the Lord Karthikeya Subramanian at Katharagama. Lord Karthikeya was requested to go to the battle field by Lord Indra on the last day of the war. This was done to protect Lord Rama from the wrath of Brahmaastharam shot by King Ravana which otherwise would have weakened Lord Rama. Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple (Kalubowila): Hanuman is often called Anjaneyar by Tamils, as his mother’s name is Anjan. This kovil is the first Anjaneyar temple in Sri Lanka and the only one on the island dedicate to Lord Hanuman in his Panchamuga form, this means with five faces. And it is said to be the only temple in the world to have a chariot for Anjaneyar. Its chariot festival is held annually end of December or begin of January, it is one of the most popular processions in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. There is a new five metres tall granite statue of Rama’s devote supporter. Hanuman is believed to have started his searching for Sita in the Baroda hills. Hanuman traditionally was not as popular among Sri Lankan Tamil devotees as he indeed is in India, because he devastated parts of the island with his burning tail. But in recent times Hindu missionaries and local Tamil spiritual leaders began building shrines for worshipping Hanuman in Sri Lanka, too. The city established by the British in the nineteenth century, and known as “Little England” and is a popular holiday resort for Sri Lankans & tourists due to its cool climate and quaint colonial feel with its little bungalows surrounded by hedgerows. Visit Seetha Amman Temple and Hakgala Botanical Garden. About 15km away is Seetha Amman Temple, said to be built at the spot where Ravna held Sita captive, as related in the Ramayana. The small temple has a collection of statues, including a couple of Kali mages.The Hakgala Botanical Gardens was one of the pleasure gardens of King Ravana. Day 04: NUWARA ELIYA / DIVURUMPOLA / ELLA / TISSAMAHARAMA After breakfast at hotel, transfer Ella. Visit Divurumpola temple en route. Divrumpola Temple: Divurumpola is said to be the location where Sita underwent the famous fire ordeal Agni Pariksha, in order to prove her chastity. From the flames arose the fire god Agni who was invoked by Sita. He lifted her from the flames unharmed and presented her to Lord Rama who explained this test was only necessary to prove the truth of her purity and innocence to everybody. Divurumpola is said to have been the location of this episode, because the Sinhalese name means marketplace of oath. Today the temple is respected as a suitable place for oaths that can be helpful settling disputes between parties.Visit the Ravana cave & water falls Ravana Cave: These tunnels prove beyond doubt the architectural brilliance of King Ravana. These tunnels served as a quick means of transport through the hills and also as a secret passage. These tunnels networked all the important cities, airport and dairy farms. A close look at these tunnels indicates that they are palace and a tunnel existed. Existing tunnels mouths are situated Ishtripura at Walimada, Ravana cave at Bandarawela, Senapitiya at Halagala, Ramboda, Labokelle, Wariyapola, and Mataleand Sitakotuwa Hasalaka. In addition there are many more tunnels. Ravana Waterfalls: A breath taking waterfall, 1080 feet high (cascades into several falls) close to the the material is khondalite, a kind of limestone which undergoes decay faster. This has resulted in many cases being formed near the falls. King Ravana of Ramayana legend is said to have lived in one of the caves above the waterfalls. Road from Ella to Wellawaya about 6 Km south from Ella. The stream, a tributary of Kirindi Oya plunges with a foaming spray over a series of ledges into the valley close to a bend in the road. The waters rise from Wewatenna highland above the rocks. Lord Hanuman went to Himalayas, lifted the whole hill and brought it. As he was not able to identify the lifesaving herbs alone. It is believed that part of the hill fell on five places in Sri Lanka, namely, Rumassala in Galle, Dolu Kanda in Hiripitiya, Ritigala on the Habarana Anuradhapura road, and Thalladi in Mannar and Kachchathivu in the north.Transfer from Unawtuna to Bentota. DAY 06: BENTOTA / COLOMBO After breakfast at hotel, transfer to Colombo. Visit Anjaneyar Temple in Kalubowila en route. Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple (Kalubowila): Hanuman is often called Anjaneyar by Tamils, as his mother’s name is Anjan. This kovil is the first Anjaneyar temple in Sri Lanka and the only one on the island dedicated to Lord Hanuman in his Panchamuga form, this means with five faces. And it is said to be the only temple in the world to have a chariot for Anjaneyar. Its chariot festival is held annually end of December or begin of January, it is one of the most popular processions in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. Day 02: SIGIRIYA TO DAMBULLA After breakfast at hotel, climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya Lion Rock: Climb the 5th century Sigiriya Rock fortress which is a UNESCO world heritage site, built by King Kashyap (477-495). The spectacular citadel of Sigiriya rises sheer and impregnable out of the plains of the dry zone. On completion visit Dambulla Cave Temple. Dambulla Cave Temple: Dambulla Viharaya contains an abundance of valuable material from the very earliest times till the late eighteenth century, and shows the evolution of the Singhalese Buddhist art. Day 03: SIGIRIYA TO KANDY After breakfast at hotel. Proceed to Kandy via Matale. Visit a spice garden in Matale en route, to see different spices for which Sri Lanka is famous for. Day 04: KANDY Today proceed to Kandy. Evening Enjoy sightseeing tour of Kandy.
