Ahmedabad’s Old City feels like stepping into a time machine. Narrow lanes filled with centuries-old havelis showcase some of the finest wooden carvings you’ll ever see. The pols (traditional neighborhoods) with their bird feeders and secret passages tell stories of community living that’s becoming rare in today’s world.
Then there’s Sabarmati Ashram – Mahatma Gandhi’s home for 12 years. Walking through the simple quarters where he lived and worked hits differently. You can almost feel his presence as you explore the museum housing his personal belongings and letters. The peaceful riverside setting makes you understand why he chose this spot for contemplation and planning India’s freedom movement.
The Rann of Kutch isn’t just a salt desert – it’s a surreal landscape that transforms under moonlight into a glowing white canvas stretching endlessly. During the Rann Utsav (November-February), this barren land bursts into a vibrant celebration of Gujarati culture.
The nearby villages showcase incredible craftsmanship – Ajrakh block printing, mirror embroidery, and bandhani tie-dye that take months to perfect. In villages like Bhuj and Hodka, artisans welcome you into their homes to demonstrate techniques passed down for generations.
Gir offers something you can’t experience anywhere else on earth – seeing the majestic Asiatic lion in its natural habitat. These aren’t African lions; they’re the last remaining population of a subspecies that once roamed from Greece to India.
A safari through Gir’s dry deciduous forests brings encounters with not just lions but leopards, jackals, and over 300 bird species. The early morning drives increase your chances of spotting a pride lounging in the golden light. The Maldhari tribal communities living within the park boundaries add cultural richness to your wildlife experience.
Somnath Temple stands defiantly on the Arabian Sea coast, rebuilt numerous times after repeated destruction – a testament to undying faith. The evening aarti with waves crashing behind creates a spiritual atmosphere that’s hard to describe.
Dwarka, believed to be Lord Krishna’s kingdom, now sits partly submerged beneath the sea. The main Dwarkadhish Temple with its 72 pillars and intricate carvings draws pilgrims year-round. What makes these temples special isn’t just their architecture but the devotional energy flowing through them.
The world’s tallest statue isn’t just impressive for its size. Standing at 597 feet, the Statue of Unity offers perspective-shifting views from its observation deck. The exhibition halls inside tell Sardar Patel’s compelling story.
Nearby, the engineering marvel of Sardar Sarovar Dam controls the mighty Narmada River while generating hydroelectric power. The sound of waves crashing against the temple walls creates a meditative backdrop for your prayers.

Short on time but big on devotion? This condensed 3-night package delivers the essential spiritual experiences without the extra frills.
You’ll start with a day in Dwarka, focusing on the magnificent Dwarkadhish Temple complex. The intricate carvings and spiritual significance make this a must-visit for any devotee of Lord Krishna. The evening aarti here is absolutely magical – trust me, you’ll feel it in your heart.
The journey continues to Somnath, where you’ll witness the majestic Somnath Temple overlooking the Arabian Sea. The temple’s architecture is breathtaking, especially during sunset when golden hues reflect off its spires.
This shorter itinerary still includes stops at key religious sites like Bhalka Tirth and Triveni Sangam, ensuring you don’t miss the spiritual essence of the region. While more compact, this package provides enough time for darshan at each temple without feeling rushed.
Both packages include comfortable accommodations, transportation, and knowledgeable guides who share fascinating stories about these ancient sites.
Wildlife Adventure at Gir National Park
Ever wondered where the last surviving Asiatic lions roam freely? It’s right here in Gujarat. Gir National Park isn’t just another wildlife spot—it’s the only place on earth where you can see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
When you book your safari, try to go early morning. That’s when the lions are most active, and you’ll have the best chance of spotting them lounging in the grasslands or marking their territory. The guides know exactly where these big cats hang out, so you’re almost guaranteed a sighting.
But Gir isn’t only about lions. Keep your eyes peeled for leopards, jackals, and over 300 bird species that call this forest home.
Relaxing Beach Getaway in Diu
After the thrill of the wild, Diu’s tranquil beaches are the perfect contrast. This former Portuguese colony feels like a little slice of Europe right in India.
Nagoa Beach is the crown jewel, with its pristine white sand and calm waters perfect for swimming. The beach is surprisingly uncrowded compared to Goa, giving you plenty of space to unwind.
Don’t miss exploring Diu Fort at sunset—the golden light hitting those massive stone walls creates a photographer’s dream. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try paragliding over the Arabian Sea for views that’ll make your Instagram followers seriously jealous.
The seafood here is ridiculously fresh. Just hit up any local restaurant, order the catch of the day, and thank me later.
Getting from Kolkata to Gujarat is a breeze if you know your options. Multiple airlines operate direct flights from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport to major Gujarat cities. You can reach Ahmedabad in just 2.5 hours, with IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India offering daily connections. Flights to Vadodara take roughly the same time, while reaching Surat might require a quick stopover, pushing your journey to about 4 hours total.
Pro tip: Book your flights at least 45 days in advance to snag those sweet deals – prices can drop by up to 30%!
Trains offer a scenic alternative for budget travelers. The Howrah-Ahmedabad Express (12833) covers the distance in about 30 hours, while the Saurashtra Express connects Kolkata to Rajkot and Dwarka. These long-distance trains come equipped with sleeper, AC three-tier, and AC two-tier options.
Pack some snacks and entertainment for the journey, though most trains offer decent pantry services. The train route showcases beautiful landscapes across eastern and western India – a treat for photography enthusiasts!
Most Gujarat packages from Kolkata typically include:
What’s usually not covered:
Winter (October to February) wins hands down as the perfect time to explore Gujarat from Kolkata. Temperatures hover between 10-25°C, making sightseeing comfortable across Ahmedabad, Kutch, and Gir.
Avoid summer months (March to June) when temperatures soar above 40°C. The monsoon (July to September) brings moderate rainfall and humidity – not ideal for places like Rann of Kutch, but perfect for visiting the lush Saputara hill station.
If you’re after specific festivals, plan around events like Navratri (October), Rann Utsav (November to February), or the International Kite Festival (January).
Famous Gujarati Thali and Street Foods
Gujarat’s culinary scene will blow your mind. The classic Gujarati thali is a feast you can’t miss – a large round plate filled with tiny bowls of deliciousness. Think fluffy rotlis (flatbreads), dal (lentils), kadhi (yogurt curry), and at least four different vegetable dishes. The sweet-and-spicy balance is what makes it special – most dishes have that hint of jaggery or sugar that’s uniquely Gujarati.
Hit the streets and you’ll find dhokla – those soft, yellow, steamed cakes topped with mustard seeds and cilantro. Totally addictive. Khandvi, those delicate yellow rolls made from gram flour, are another must-try. And don’t even get me started on fafda-jalebi – crispy gram flour strips paired with syrupy sweet jalebi, the ultimate breakfast combo in Gujarat.
